چکیده

Using the 850μm SCUBA camera on the JCMT and a scanning technique different from other sub-mm surveys, we have obtained a 125 square arcminute map centered on the Hubble Deep Field. The one-sigma sensitivity to point sources is roughly 3mJy and thus our map probes the brighter end of the sub-mm source counts. We find 6 sources with a flux greater than about 12mJy (> 4σ) and, after a careful accounting of incompleteness and flux bias, estimate the integrated density of bright sources N(> 12mJy) = 164 −58 degree −2 (68 per cent confidence bounds).

The Brighter Side of Sub-mm Source Counts: a Scuba Scan-map of the Hubble Deep Field

We present an 11 × 11 arcminute map centred on the Hubble Deep Field taken at 850μm with the SCUBA camera on the JCMT. The map has an average onesigma sensitivity to point sources of about 2.3 mJy and thus probes the brighter end of the sub-mm source counts. We find 7 sources with a flux greater than 9mJy (∼ 4σ), and therefore estimate N(> 9mJy) = 208 −72 degree . This result is consistent with...

The HDF-North SCUBA Super-map I: Submillimetre maps, sources and number counts

We investigate the emission of sub-millimetre-wave radiation from galaxies in a 165 square arcminute region surrounding the Hubble Deep Field North. The data were obtained from dedicated observing runs from our group and others using the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and combined using techniques specifically developed for low signal-tonoise source recovery. The resulting ‘...

The HDF-North SCUBA Super-map II: Multi-wavelength properties

We present radio, optical and X-ray detected counterparts to the sub-mm sources found using SCUBA in the Hubble Deep Field North region (GOODS-N). A new counterpart identification statistic is developed to identify properties of galaxies detected at other wavelengths that can be used to aid counterpart identification. We discriminate between criteria that can use used to pre-select sub-mm brigh...

The HDF-North SCUBA Super-map III: Optical and near-infrared properties of submillimetre galaxies

We present a new sub-mm ‘Super-map’ in the HDF-North region (GOODS-North field), containing 40 statistically robust sources at 850μm. This map contains additional data, and several new sources, including one of the brightest blank-sky extragalactic sub-mm sources ever detected. We have used the ACS HST images and ground-based near-IR observations from GOODS, along with deep radio observations, ...

Shades: the Scuba Half Degree Extragalactic Survey

SHADES is a new, major, extragalactic sub-mm survey currently being undertaken with SCUBA on the JCMT. The aim of this survey is to map 0.5 square degrees of sky at a depth sufficient to provide the first, major (≃ 300 source), unbiased sample of bright (S850 ≃ 8 mJy) sub-mm sources. Combined with extensive multi-frequency supporting observations already in hand, we aim to measure the redshift ...
